Why Work-Life Balance?

We often think of “work-life balance” as having enough time to get our required work done while still participating in—and enjoying—the rest of our lives. The challenge with this mindset is that compartmentalization of work and life fractures our ability to be present and focused. This can cause the mind to drift toward the ‘deficits’ in our life, such as time, money, information, and other resources. When this happens, we end up seeking to both optimize and "acquire more" of these resources instead of devoting our energy to what’s most important and relevant to us in the moment.

The key to breaking through this barrier is to create balance in all aspects your life. This sense of balance has less to do with how much time we spend and more with the quality of mind we bring to what we do.

True balance is achieved only when we fully apply our whole selves to what we’re doing in every moment. When working, work. When playing, play. Balance comes from the inner quality of presence you develop with mindfulness across everything you do.

Join Tend in a conversation about how we can leverage ‘Engaged Mindfulness’ to find and retain balance in ourselves and our lives.

The 3 keys to finding true balance in yourself

Being Present

Being mindfully present to your body and mind at all times keeps you from being thrown off by challenges, questions, uncertainties and distractions in work and at home. Focus on one thing instead of multi-tasking.

Finding Equanimity

Accepting imperfection and impermanence quiets the inner critic and neutralizes the frantic mind of activity. Avoid burnout by accepting the inevitable gaps between reality and your ideal outcomes.

Resourcing Internally

Instead of focusing on what you lack — time, money and other resources — learn to manage your inner resources of attention, energy and the information available to you already.

Meet your Instructor

Hi, I'm Paul!

I’ve been practicing meditation for over thirty years and teaching for twenty. My heart-centered focus in this space has allowed me to carve a nourishing path toward presence and balance around work, family and personal responsibilities. I’ve also been an entrepreneurial leader for decades and have worked with scores of professionals to help them become more centered in their work.

I love showing people how the simple process of turning inward can radically change their relationship to the external world. At the center of this philosophy is my relationship to my family: my wife Aria and our five kids, ranging in age from 12 to 28.

When you are fully present, you feel it in your energy and confidence, and others feel it too.

What is Engaged Mindfulness?

Engaged Mindfulness is a practice directed both internally and around the greater context of a person’s life. Work, family, friends, communities, and larger environments are all considered and held in a space of openness and integrity.

Engaged Mindfulness meets the challenges of stress, burnout, anxiety, overwhelm, and distraction by encouraging a continuous connection to our inner capacities, which are far greater than our “problem-seeking minds” can know.

“Paul has given me new insights into how to approach my work life and how to integrate work with my passion for spiritual growth and more deepened awareness. The result has been a transformation in how I approach work. I have also reduced my stress level tremendously, while also increasing my creativity on the job. The end result is that I am more productive and at the same time I can listen to my work colleagues in a whole new way that allows for more connection.”
